7 Helpful Tips for Moving to a New House
August 17, 2020

Feeling stressed about moving? It’s not surprising since it’s considered one of the most stressful events in a person’s life. Still, nearly 40 million people move to a new place every year. The stress of hauling your stuff across town or even across the country can dull the excitement of finally finding your new perfect home. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Here’s seven great tips and tricks to take all of the stress out of moving to a new house.
1. Out With the Old, Move in With the New
Don’t bring your old baggage to your new place. Purge your home of all of the clutter and junk that it’s accumulated over the years. Before moving, go through everything and make piles to save, donate, or throw away. Start life in your new place with a clean slate.
2. Tackle Paperwork
There’s going to be some paperwork involved when moving to a new home. Things like utilities and change of address need to be taken care of as soon as possible. Luckily, we are here to make this part of the process easy by providing the contact info you need to switch utilities to your name. We provide a 10 day grace period which gives new homeowners enough time to get everything lined up.
3. Walk-Through Your New Home
Our award-winning warranty department wants to make sure you’re satisfied. Before closing, you’ll do a thorough walk-through and certify your new home is just right.
After you move in, you can provide a 30-day and one-year check-up sheet for any needed touch-ups. Contacting the warranty department is easy, just email them at warranty@tropicanahomes.com.
When you’re done closing don’t forget to check the folder you received. There you will have important documents such as the check-up sheets, emergency warranty numbers, and checklists to prepare your home for the seasons. You can also find all of these documents in a digital format on our Homeowners page. Just sign up and you’re done!
4. Research Movers
Hiring movers? Do your homework and shop around to make sure you get the best deal. Your first choice might not be available when you need to move if it’s during the busy season. Research different companies to get the best deal at a time that works for you. Be sure to check their reviews, and to talk to them before hiring their services. You want to make sure they will protect your items throughout the moving process.
5. Pack a “First Day” Box
Imagine your everyday essentials packed up and tucked away in a mountain of boxes. Don’t make moving more stressful; pack a “first day” box with everything you need. On top of packing a box full of your most immediate essentials, pack a second box with emergency paperwork, too. These are things you can’t afford to lose, like birth certificates or medicine, and need to have on hand if catastrophe strikes. Keep these with you, either on the plane ride or car drive. Just in case the movers arrive later, you’ll have your back up ready.
6. Organize Your Boxes
When packing your boxes, make it easier on yourself and the movers. Follow these tips to make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible:
• Put heavy stuff on bottom, lighter stuff on top
• Fill gaps with sheets, pillows, or other soft and light material
• Group heavier objects in smaller boxes to keep them manageable
Label each box with what room it needs to go to
This method makes packing and unpacking that much easier!
7. Get to Know Your New Neighborhood
Moving to a beautiful place like El Paso, Clint, or Socorro can be exciting. Don’t wait to move in before you explore.
Check out all that your new location has to offer. Be friendly and introduce yourself to your new neighbors. If you are new to the city read one of our previous blogs to learn how to find the best school that is nearby your new home.
